The Opening Ceremony of the 10th Pacific Mini Games has taken place at Korman Stadium in Port Vila yesterday evening and was a delight for the many thousands who gathered to witness one of Vanuatu’s biggest hosted events.
Cultural dance performances opened the night and as the VAN2017 theme song, led by Arthur Knight was performed, the crowd was on its feet and the VAN2017 Games took off in great style.
Athletes entered the arena as is the tradition, under their nations name and flag with Wallis and Futuna leading the way having hosted the last Mini Games in 2013.
Amidst all the excitement and cheering from the crowd, the VAN2017 mascot Nasi led the parade of the nations as the athletes marched onto the track and then onto a central stage, introducing themselves to the invited dignitaries and guests.
Wallis and Futuna, American Samoa, Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Guam, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, PNG, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu made their entrance followed lastly by the large delegation from Vanuatu.
The National Anthem was perfectly presented and brought tears to many and as the traditional Games’ oaths were taken on behalf of the athletes and officials following speeches from the Prime Minister, Pacific Games Council President and the head of Van2017.
Vanessa Quai then lit the arena with her majestic voice before fireworks blew up the sky, truly sending the country into VAN2017 Games fever.
Social Media was abuzz as thousands went online to thank the VAN2017 organizing committee for a grand opening to VAN2017 Games.
