Indonesian Police, State Intelligence & Cyber Agency Team Up to Probe Foreign Involvement in Papua Unrest

The Indonesian Police, State Intelligence and Cyber Encryption Agency are currently investigating reports of foreigners supporting the Free Papua Movement (OPM).

Police Chief General Tito Karnavian has exposed the involvement of some foreigner in the string of riots in Papua and West Papua.

“We are investigating the suspects but we cannot spill it yet” said the Indonesian Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Mohammad Iqbal in his office South of Jakarta, Monday, September 2.

Iqbal suspected people joining the rallies have no idea about what is happening.

“There are indication of a supervised provocation and we have set the map, we have marked the people,” he said.

The police have teamed up with Foreign Affairs Ministry, State Intelligence Agency (BIN), and all related institutions to probe the involvement of the foreign parties.

The Indonesian Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) also discovered foreign social media accounts that deliberately distributed hoaxes on conditions in Papua.

The BSSN chief Hinsa Siburian said the accounts might belong to individuals or groups.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Politics, Legal, and Security, Wiranto said they have collected names of provocateurs of demonstrations in Papua and West Papua.
